International Day for Universal Access to Information: The importance of Online Space for Access to Information

The International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) is celebrated annually on 28th September. A day established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of access to information as a fundamental human right and to promote transparency, accountability, and sustainable development.

This year we spotlight on the theme: "the Importance of the Online Space for Access to Information."

In an increasingly interconnected world, the internet has become a pivotal tool in ensuring that information is universally accessible, enabling individuals to exercise their right to know, learn, and participate in the digital age.

The internet has revolutionized the way information is access and shared. As a digital rights campaigner, I am bound to raise awareness highlighting the importance of the online space for access to information.

The online space has the potential to bridge the digital divide by providing access to information to those who were previously marginalized or excluded. Hence the call upon information holders like Governments and other institutions to increasingly adopt open data initiatives, making valuable information readily available to the public online thereby helping the media to impart the same to citizens.

That way will strengthen transparency and accountability as the citizenry will have access to government data, financial information, and organizational activities, promoting greater accountability.

However, the vast opportunities presented by the online space also comes with challenges. Issues such as digital privacy, cyber-bullying, misinformation, and unequal access must be addressed to ensure that the online space remain a reliable and equitable source of information.

As we commemorate the IDUAI 2023, governments, security agencies, tech companies, civil society, the media and individuals should recognize the critical role of the online space in universal access to information and to work collaboratively to:

  • 1.      Bridge the digital divide by expanding internet access to underserved communities.
  • 2.      Promote digital literacy and critical thinking skills to combat misinformation.
  • 3.      Safeguard digital privacy and protect individuals' right to access information securely.

Again, as we celebrate the IDUAI 2023, let us embrace the potential of the online space to empower individuals, promote transparency, and advance the global pursuit of knowledge in a responsible manner.
